BCBA workforce density by state
The saved BACB snapshot lists 81,570 BCBAs across the 50 states and DC. Compare credential counts with each state's population under 18.
BCBAs per 10,000 children: selected state comparisons
BCBA and BCBA-D records per 10,000 residents under 18
BACB snapshot retrieved October 12, 2026; Census population July 1, 2024. Selected high and low density states; all 51 jurisdictions are in the table.
A ratio, not a waiting list
Massachusetts has 4,101 records in this snapshot and 1,355,719 residents under 18 in the population file. The calculation gives 30.2 behavior analysts per 10,000 children. Wyoming's corresponding figure is much smaller.
Neither ratio says how many appointments a family can book. A certificant may work with adults or in a school. Some may not be seeing patients at all. The denominator also includes children without an autism diagnosis.
Counting the same places
We added the 50 states and DC and got 81,570. The regional file has other entries too. Including territories would give a different total, as would quoting the worldwide figure from another board page.
The two source pages also give RBT totals that do not reconcile. We have left those comparisons out rather than picking the larger number. County provider listings are a separate record system and are not added to this credential count.
What this data cannot tell you
- Certification does not establish active clinical work, full-time employment, or appointment availability.
- The numerator is an October 2026 snapshot; the denominator is July 2024 population.
- Credential records use reported geographic location, which can differ from the place of practice.
- The denominator is all children under 18, not children diagnosed with autism. RBT comparisons are withheld pending reconciliation.
How this report was built
For each state and DC, we add the BCBA and BCBA-D columns from the saved regional file. We divide that sum by residents under 18 from the July 2024 population estimates. Multiplying by 10,000 gives the density shown here, rounded to one decimal. No adjustment for hours worked is available.
Underlying research files were retrieved on October 12, 2026. The website release was checked against those saved source versions on October 13. Live source pages may change after that date.
